A long overdue re-read! I love this book! Great Expectations is Dickens thirteenth novel and often cited as his greatest work, and whilst this is not an all time favourite, I can see why people love this book。 Ultimately this is a coming of age novel as we follow Pip, an orphan, from age six into his later life across these 500 pages。 Along Pips journey we meet some iconic characters, namely Estella and Miss Havisham (and her famous wedding dress)。 Dickens discussion on topics of wealth and poverty, love and rejection were well realised Great Expectations is Dickens thirteenth novel and often cited as his greatest work, and whilst this is not an all time favourite, I can see why people love this book。 Ultimately this is a coming of age novel as we follow Pip, an orphan, from age six into his later life across these 500 pages。 Along Pips journey we meet some iconic characters, namely Estella and Miss Havisham (and her famous wedding dress)。 Dickens discussion on topics of wealth and poverty, love and rejection were well realised。 Great Expectations for me was engaging enough so I was able to enjoy my reading experience, however I am just not a classics reader。 Almost every classic I read, I have an issue with the writing style and the pacing。 This was a long enough book for not a lot to happen, and due to the old writing style, it takes a while to adjust。 Enjoyed my time reading this!! 。。。more

。。。more

Meraviglioso! I had to read this novel in high school, but to be totally honest, I barely remembered anything about it。 As someone who wants to start getting back into classic novels, I decided to revisit it, and I can say that I'm pleasantly surprised with how much I enjoyed it。I'll start by saying that I enjoyed this story a lot more in my 30s than I did as a teenager。 I didn't appreciate it when I was forced to read it as a 15/16-year-old。 I really liked the dramatic differences between all the characters。 I had to read this novel in high school, but to be totally honest, I barely remembered anything about it。 As someone who wants to start getting back into classic novels, I decided to revisit it, and I can say that I'm pleasantly surprised with how much I enjoyed it。I'll start by saying that I enjoyed this story a lot more in my 30s than I did as a teenager。 I didn't appreciate it when I was forced to read it as a 15/16-year-old。 I really liked the dramatic differences between all the characters。 Joe and Pip were easily my two favorite characters。 I loved their relationship and the fact that, despite their faults, they were still extremely likable。 I honestly wished I could hug Joe through the pages of the novel because he was just that sweet of a guy。 I don't know what the heck he saw in Pip's older sister, who seemed extremely abusive, but I think the way he dealt with that relationship just gave me another reason to love him。 He saw the best in people。 And Pip, even though he had so many problems and had such low self esteem, was someone I loved simply because he was someone I could easily relate to。 Biddy was also a wonderful character that I found easy to love。 Miss Havisham, though she was a cruel character, was so unique that I enjoyed her parts of the story as well。 Almost everyone was unique and interesting。I can't give this novel a full five stars, though。 The main reasons involve certain elements of the plot and one specific character。 The one character in question is Estella。 I hated her so much, I wanted to slap Pip every time he thought about how much he loved her。 There was nothing to love about her。 She was so nasty and cruel that I had no idea how he could have liked her so much。 It had to have been her beauty on the outside, because there was no beauty on the inside! I was actually hoping they *didn't* get together, simply because Estella was such a terrible person and Pip deserved so much better。The issue I had with the plot is kind of hard to describe。 I will have slight spoilers here, but nothing giving too much away for those of you who want to read it。 I liked everything separately (Pip's connection with the convict, the connection with the person who attacked his sister, his relationship with Miss Havisham, etc。) They were all enjoyable, but I didn't like how they blended together。 The plot seemed to jump all over the place with these elements。 First there's the convict, then there's Miss Havisham, then there's the convict again, then there's the person who attacked his sister approaching him, then there's Estella's true parents being revealed, then there's the convict again。。。! It just jumped all over and didn't blend as well as it could have。 I'm not saying I didn't enjoy these elements; I just didn't like how Dickens wrote them all separately and made it awkwardly blocky rather than working to blend them together in a better fashion。So, all in all, I enjoyed this novel。 I would suggest it to anyone who wants to start reading classics。 I would just warn them that the relationship element between certain characters might annoy them。 If you can handle terrible love interests, you can handle everything else in this novel。 。。。more

Did not believe I'd enjoy this book as much as I did, looking forward to reading Oliver Twist and now。The very last pages were pretty meh, ending very much expected since halfway into the book, but what can one expect from a Victorian bildungsroman。 With this book you get pretty much what you ask for story-wise。The characters are mostly stereotypical for its era/Dickens himself I assume。 Except for lady Havisham, whom the story might as well be about, since most of the events in Pip's life arris Did not believe I'd enjoy this book as much as I did, looking forward to reading Oliver Twist and now。The very last pages were pretty meh, ending very much expected since halfway into the book, but what can one expect from a Victorian bildungsroman。 With this book you get pretty much what you ask for story-wise。The characters are mostly stereotypical for its era/Dickens himself I assume。 Except for lady Havisham, whom the story might as well be about, since most of the events in Pip's life arrise from her past and her actions。 Shame we don't learn a tad more about her once we realize how important she actually is, late in the story。I expected good writing, instead I had to deal with amazing writing。 All in all, my fond memories of the book are so pleasant perhaps only because of the way the critical events in the "not so interesting" story are built up and expanded upon, and how the gloomy yet exciting London settings are described。 However unspecific the last few lines of this review actually are, the writing's what earned this book the fourh star。 。。。more

A classic, surely。 I has never read the book and here instead listened。 Dicken's prose stunning。 I'm giving it 4*s rather than 5*s because I found the plot a little droll, and admittedly am not strong on books that center around class struggles, the haves and the have nots (and is having in all cases better than not having? Surely not。。。)。 Fine fodder for literature, just not that compelling to me。 But the prose is stunning--did I mention that?!--and surely a book everyone should read or listen A classic, surely。 I has never read the book and here instead listened。 Dicken's prose stunning。 I'm giving it 4*s rather than 5*s because I found the plot a little droll, and admittedly am not strong on books that center around class struggles, the haves and the have nots (and is having in all cases better than not having? Like all Dickens novels, this one could have been half as long and more meaningful。 But that's how it is when you're paid by the word。 The word "expectations" lost all meaning to me by the end。 The book had interesting twists and turns and I thought the ending was a good open finality, even if done elements were predictable。 Like all Dickens novels, this one could have been half as long and more meaningful。 But that's how it is when you're paid by the word。 The word "expectations" lost all meaning to me by the end。 The book had interesting twists and turns and I thought the ending was a good open finality, even if done elements were predictable。 。。。more

This book is a bit complicated to me, I can’t really figure out whether I like it or not。 The book itself is a bit thick, namely, with loads of pages to read。 Volume I is interesting。 I always love the first volume of the coming of age novel, because it provides to the reader the protagonist’s most simple and pure mind of their life。 Watching Pip went from a carefree child to a poor kid who disturbed by all those desires is rather sad but I can totally relate to him。 Nowadays, there are so many This book is a bit complicated to me, I can’t really figure out whether I like it or not。 The book itself is a bit thick, namely, with loads of pages to read。 Volume I is interesting。 I always love the first volume of the coming of age novel, because it provides to the reader the protagonist’s most simple and pure mind of their life。 Watching Pip went from a carefree child to a poor kid who disturbed by all those desires is rather sad but I can totally relate to him。 Nowadays, there are so many things that would make us desire and envy, I would never guarantee that if I were him, I would be better。 The second volume is rather boring, just narrated how miserable he was, but also how he addicted to the “gentleman’s life”。 The third volume is significant, with lots of plot twists and revealing, every chapter is amazing and make me keep reading。 (Reading volume two is really painful compared to volume three) I almost cried at the end because of the relationship between Pip and Magwitch, I think it is the best thing in the book, and the most important point that the readers could observe the growth of Pip。 I’m really glad that in the end he finally found peace and the life he wanted, although I think I like the first edition of ending better :) 。。。more
